Will Your Carry-On Fit Through TSA’s New CT Scanners?
TSA’s CT scanners do not create a new nationwide airline carry-on size limit. Airlines still set their own cabin-bag rules, while TSA uses multiple checkpoint CT configurations. Do not rely on one internet “scanner opening” number as a nationwide guarantee.

Is There a New TSA Carry-On Size Limit?
No. Airline carry-on dimensions and TSA checkpoint screening are separate rules. Your airline decides whether a bag meets its cabin-bag size policy. TSA decides how the bag is screened at the security checkpoint.
Why Can CT Scanner Fit Vary?
TSA’s current Checkpoint Property Screening System program includes Base, Mid-size and Full-size CT configurations, with qualified systems from several manufacturers. Airports and checkpoints are not all using one identical machine.
What If My Bag Is Bulky or Oversized?
A bag or item can receive additional screening even when it is generally permitted. Follow the TSA officer’s instructions at the checkpoint. Airline approval for a carry-on does not override security screening.
Can My Laptop Stay in the Bag?
TSA’s CT systems create three-dimensional images of bag contents. At CT-equipped lanes, travelers can be allowed to leave electronics and travel-size liquids in their carry-on bags. Follow the instructions at the lane you are using.
Did the 3.4 oz Liquid Rule Go Away?
No. TSA’s 3-1-1 rule still limits ordinary carry-on liquids, aerosols, gels, creams and pastes to containers of 3.4 ounces or less. A CT scanner changing what stays inside the bag is not the same as removing the liquid-size limit.
