PEWEE and PEEWEE: Why Spelling Bee Accepts Both
PEWEE is not a misspelling. It is a real bird name for small flycatchers, and PEEWEE can be a variant spelling of that same bird name. PEEWEE also has other uses for something unusually small. Both PEWEE and PEEWEE appear in the official September 24, 2026 Spelling Bee answer list.

What does PEWEE mean?
PEWEE names any of several small New World flycatchers in the genus Contopus. The word is associated with the birds’ call.
Is PEEWEE just a misspelling?
No. American Heritage lists PEEWEE as a variant of PEWEE for the bird name. PEEWEE also has a separate informal sense for a person or thing that is unusually small.
Why can both appear in the same Spelling Bee?
The September 24 hive uses P as the required center letter with A, B, E, L, O and W around it. Both spellings satisfy the letter rules, and both appear in the accepted answer list for that puzzle.
The letter rules alone do not guarantee that every dictionary word will be accepted. The relevant fact here is that this specific puzzle accepts both forms.
Do PEWEE and PEEWEE sound different?
For the shared bird-name sense, the dictionary pronunciations are effectively the same “PEE-wee.” The extra E changes the spelling, not the basic pronunciation of that shared sense.
