What Changed — and What Did Not?

What changed is the naming policy of the U.S. federal government. As implementation proceeds, federal agencies are directed to use Lake America in their geographic records, maps and official materials.

The order does not automatically change:

• the name used by Canada;
• the terminology used by international organizations or foreign governments;
• the labels chosen by private map services, publishers or news organizations;
• every state or local use of the name;
• what people call the lake in everyday speech.

Private map labels can change over time, but they are live third-party decisions. This page does not treat any individual map service’s current label as a permanent part of the answer.

Who Uses Which Name?

• U.S. federal usage: Lake America, as directed by the executive order and implemented through the federal geographic naming system.
• Canadian usage: Lake Ontario.

Can the U.S. Rename a Lake Shared With Canada?

The lake is a transboundary body of water shared by the United States and Canada. The order changes a U.S. official name; it does not transfer territory, change the international boundary or give one country ownership of the entire lake.

Where Is Lake America?

It is the same Great Lake long known as Lake Ontario, between New York State in the United States and the province of Ontario in Canada. The international boundary runs through the lake.

“Lake America” therefore does not identify a new lake. It is a new U.S. federal name for an existing shared body of water.

Why Are Both Names Showing Up?

A U.S. federal document may use Lake America as the naming change is implemented. A Canadian source and many international references will continue to use Lake Ontario.

The apparent contradiction comes from context. The practical question is not simply “Which name is correct?” but “Which naming authority or audience is using it?”

What Does “Ontario” Mean?

In his response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said the name comes from the Wendat word Ontari’io, which he rendered as “the lake is beautiful, the lake is big.” He also said the name has been in use for more than 400 years. That history is part of Canada’s reason for continuing to use Lake Ontario.

Carney’s response also used the unfamiliar word hydronyms. A hydronym is the proper name of a body of water, which means both “Lake Ontario” and “Lake America,” when used as names for this lake, are hydronyms.
