A head waiter supervises dining-room service. In Connections #1210, the opening HEAD is also a nautical term for a toilet.
Published
The October 3 board places HEAD WAITER among two-word tiles whose opening words can carry a second meaning. The ordinary restaurant definition alone does not explain the accepted group.
What a head waiter means
A head waiter is a senior waiter who coordinates service or supervises other waiters. In the job title, HEAD means leading or in charge. You do not need to invent an unusual restaurant role to understand the phrase.
Why the opening word matters
The October 3, 2026 Connections board contains complete names and two-word expressions. Their everyday meanings are useful starting points, but a smaller part of a tile can carry the puzzle connection.
HEAD has a less familiar nautical meaning: a toilet aboard a ship. That use is independent of its meaning in HEAD WAITER. The phrase's normal definition remains correct even when the puzzle reads its first word differently.
Puzzle explanation — contains spoilers
In Connections #1210, HEAD WAITER belongs to STARTING WITH TERMS FOR “TOILET”:
| Tile | Opening term | Relevant meaning |
|---|---|---|
| CAN OPENER | CAN | An informal term for a toilet |
| HEAD WAITER | HEAD | A toilet, particularly in nautical usage |
| JOHN DENVER | JOHN | An informal term for a toilet |
| W.C. FIELDS | W.C. | The abbreviation for water closet |
The waiter, tool and entertainers do not share an occupation or an activity. Each complete tile begins with a term that works in another context. This is why knowing the restaurant definition alone may leave the group hard to see.
