What Does an Alternator Do?
The engine turns the alternator, usually through a belt. The alternator generates electrical power for systems such as lights, computers and accessories, while replenishing energy used from the battery.
The battery supplies the large burst of power needed to start a conventional car. Once the engine is running, the alternator provides ongoing electrical power and keeps the battery charged.
Electric vehicles generally use a different arrangement: they rely on a DC-to-DC converter rather than an engine-driven alternator to maintain the 12-volt system.
